EAST COAST.
THE UREWERA COUNTRY.—ANOTHER EXPEDITION. (Daily Southern Cross, 23rd May.) been placed in possession of latter is far from satisfactory as regards the subsidence of war’s alarms” in that unsettled tract of country. Active preparations were being made, at the date oflast advices, for an cipoo'iion lO ieuvu vi nakai aUo to s,rtko LllO iiucMO'r unu attavli tli6 in the rear of their settlements. An ample ■nnn.lv of nrovisions was being nrovided for several dvys 5 absence. After Ravine Whakatane, the force would proceed along the Rangitaeki Valley, as far as Te Whaiti Valiev ; and sanguine expectations appear to hare been entertained that the rebellions Urewera would be met with near the la-t-named place. Whether this will prove to be the case or not time alone will show, but it is much to bo feared that greater evil than good will result from the expedition. In traversing the extensive district of country over which it is proposed the force shall go, the settlements occupied by native tribes at present peaceable—or at any rate passive—will be necessarily |passed and a conflict will, in every likeHhood ensue. Should this, however, not take place, from the natives having timely warning of the approach of our forces, the presence of the expedition on a warlike errand will assuredly bo looked upon as another declaration of a wish on our part to renew hostilities, and it is hard to say, therefore, where the matter will end. The natives residing in a wide belt of country will thus bo again in arms agai st us, and raids upon out settlers may bo expected to be the order of the day for some time to come.
