OTAGO.

The Otago Daily Times, says:—Tlic ball that took place at the New Post Office 1! all on Tuesday evening, m honor of the Representatives of Otago at the late Killo Matches in Wellington, was numerously attended. The walls of the Hall were docorated under the superintendence of Mr Webb, with festoonsof (lowersintermingled with evergreens overhanging stands of arms and sabres, artistically arranged. Immediately facing the entrance were flags of all nations overshadowing Her Majesty’s Arms, above which was the word ‘‘ Welcome,” in letters formed of ivy leaves and crimson flowers, the workmanship and gift of a lady. Dancing commenced about half-past nine o’clock, tho room being comfortably filled. The number increased so much afterwards, that it was found necessary to make use of tho corridors and side rooms. It is estimated that at one time throe hundred and forty were present, of whom ncaily half were ladies. Amongst those present, were the Speaker of the Provincial Council, the Mayors of Dunedin and Port Chalmers, (the latter being accompanied by Mrs Kolfc) and Mrs Cargill, the widow of the late Captain Cargill. The music was supplied by tho Pattaliou Hand, under tho the leadership of Mr Martain. The refreshments which were ample, were supplied by Mr M'Cubbin, The rooms were well lighted, 2GI burners having been fixed in two days by Messrs A, and T. Dart. Dancing was kept up with great spirit till an early hour tins morning. The Daily Times, May Id, says that “information has been received as to the state of 'lie salmon ova at tho Waiwera, up to the close of last week. The state of tho ova was then very satisfactory,—there being clear evidences of vitality in even a larger number of (he ova than had at first appeared to be in good condition. It could not be said that the state of the boxes, as to their tightness, had perceptibly improved. Complaints were being made as to visitors to tho Ponds bringing dogs with thorn, and thus greatly disturbing the stock on the run ; and it is most desirable that I hose persons who go to the Ponds should do so unaccompanied by dogs.”
