WAIKATO.
RUMOR THAT REWI INTENDS TO ATT ACT KIHIKIHI. An alarming rumor was circulated in town on Saturday evening, to the effect that iutelligence had been received from Waikato, by the authorities, that Rewi had threatened to attack Kihikihi. The facts of the case, so for as known, are the following:—Captain Macgregor, Resident Magistrate at Raglan, received information from native sources that Rewi and Tapihana, who are at present at Kawhia, intended to make an attack on Kihikihi with as many men as they could muster. Captain Macgregor immediately sent messengers with the intelligence to Mr Mainwaring at Whatawhata, who telegraped to Auckland on the subject, It is pretty well known that Rewi has a strong desire to obtain repossession of Kihikihi, which used to be his headquarters, and it is very likely that the report originated through the possibility of a successful attack being made having been debated in the rebel council at Kawhia. Tapihana, who is mentioned as concerting with the Ngatimaniopoto chief, was one of the prisoners who escaped from the Kawau, and belongs to Kawhia, Of course, any design such as the above is probably prompted by the intelligence that so many of the Waikatos have been struck off pay, and that the troops are being withdrawn from the district, which is certain to be reported to Rewi, perhaps in an exaggerated manner.—Southern Cross, September 4.
