THE CHAMPION RACE.
The next Champion Race between the Australian, Tasmanian, and New Zealand Colonics, will, it is supposed, take place at Otago, Mr Jones, of the Commercial Hotel, having succeeded in obtaining more funds than will be requisite for the purpose. One has already been held in Victoria, in New South Wales, in Tasmanian, and, we believe in Queensland, it is, consequently, New Zealand’s turn next, but whether our Nelson sportsmen will be agreeable for this race to come off at Otago is, to say the least doubtful. The Daily Times says:— “ Mr. Jones took round a subscription list, and in the course of the day collected guarantees amounting in all to little short of £I,OOO. So confident is he of the affair, that he has made the very liberal offer to lodge £1,200 to the account of the Champion Race Fund, so as to enable Stewards to be appointed and the race to be advertised immediately. One thousand pounds has been the highest sum hitherto given for the Champion Race, so that New Zealand will be the richest of the lot.”
