ADVERTISING.
The Otago Daily Times, in an article on the rationale of advertising, makes the following remarks : “ Be the rationale what it may, one thing is certain, that to advertise it ireely is synonymous with obtaining the best price. We say the best price, without inferring that people pay "too much : wo are bound to suppose that they take care to know what they purchase. But even when there is an inclination to buy there is often an amount of indecision that requires the inlluence of persuasion to surmount. Depend upon it, drapers’ assistants and Jewellers do not indulge in their eloquent recommendations to purchase without being conscious that it serves their purpose to do so. They know there is a gulf between 1 lie idea of purchasing, and the determination to do so, and that their recommendations sene to bridge it over. “A striking illustration of the advantage of advertising was furnished a few days ago. Two towns were to be sold on the same dav, the places of sale being within a hundred yards of each other. One was a private, the oilier a Government sale. The first was advertized very extensively, of the second, the most meagre notice possible was given. The private sale was crowded to excess, and wo believe a great many lots were sold. At the Government sale but one person attended, and he was fortunate enough to be allowed to take up seven allotments at upset price. The township is situated at the entrance to the Molyneux, and must some day become a very important one. Already a custom house is established there, and it is made a port of entry. The lots were worth nearer E3O than £l2 ids., the upset price, and neve can oe ee pnestiou that with more extensive no. erti-ni-.; tney mdd have fetched a high figure. .! i ever I here an iti.iaoee of penny wise and pound foole-tii, it i- that ot saving (he eostofadvertiHug ami toeing about JO per cent, of the value ot the iiri icfe s' !d. ’
