The Rev. Brother Fergus

The Rev. Brother Fergus, one of the best-known Marist Brothers. died this morning at Auckland in his 72nd year. He was born at Kumara, his name being Matthew Gilbert. His brother was Father Thomas Gilbert, who died in 1930.. Brother Fergus entered the Brothers at Sydney in 1892. He afterwards taught at Auckland, where he took his M.Sc. degree and specialised in science. After teaching at Hamilton he was transferred to South Africa, where he was director , of two colleges. He returned to - New Zealand in 1941, and had since lived in retirement owing to his health. He was a keen Rugby coach for many years and a member of the Referees' Assocfation.
