Mr. Howard Powell

The death occurred recently at Hastings of Mr Howard Powell, who, until his removal to Hastings two years ago, was one of Otane's best-known residents. Born at Pukehou in 1878, Mr Powell was the youngest son of pioneer settlers of the district, the late Mr and Mrs N. Powell, who arrived from England in 1874. In 1897, Mr Howard Powell moved to Otane (then Kaikoura North) with his parents and resided there until 1943. In 1906 he married Miss Lily White, Brisbane. Mr Powell was in business in Otane as a builder and house decorator, first in partnership with his brother, the late Mr Hubert Powell and for more than twenty years on his own account. He was a prominent member and leader of the Gospel Hall Brethren congregation of Otane. He was a generous supporter of patriotic and Red Cross activities. He is survived by his widow, four daughters, Mrs F. J. O. Hunter, Wanganui, Miss Una Powell, Hastings, Mrs R. J. Eves. Havelock North, Mrs J. H. Allen, Pakowhai, one son, Mr Norman Powell, Hastings, a sister, Miss E. Powell, Otane, a brother, Mr J. W. Powell, Petone, and seven grandchildren. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place at the Hastings Cemetery. Mr G. Dann conducted the service and Mr H. Guilliard officiated at the graveside.
