WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. An increase in telegrams, toll calls and mails at the Waipukurau Post Office this Christmas compared with the same period last year is shown by a comparison of the totals. This year, in the four days before Christmas, 1347 telegrams were dispatched from Waipukurau and 1343 received, the flgures for Christmas 1936 being 1314 and 1191 respectively. Toll calls totalled 1583, an increase of 79. Outward mails required 386 bags (331 last year) and inward mail came in 348 bags (303). Probably no other place in the community experiences such a rush at Christmas time. The staff in Waipukurau worked at full pressure all the week before Christmas, and in some departments the rush is not yet over. Parcels inwards are still being received in large numbers. In one morning last week over 100 telegrams were lodged in three-quart-ers of an hour, the total by 11.30 a.m. being 260, and the total for the preceding day being 396. The telephone exchange is another branch of the post office that has experienced a busy time.
