AUCKLAND RACES Stretto's Briliiant Win in Sprint TE HERO'S STAKES

AUCKLAND, Last Night. " Ideal holiday weather favoured the' opening of the Christmas racing carni,val at Ellerslie to-day when the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting attracted an attendance of 41,500, as compared with 38,000 on the first day last year. The track was fast. The totalisator handled £114,841 10s, as compared with £102,798 last year, the increase being £12,043 10s. Short neck; neck. Time, 3.25 2-5. The cup was presented to the owner, Mr. H, Bayly, by his Excellency, the Governor-General, Lord Galway, who songratulated the owner, trainer and jockey. Friesiand was first to lead but after three furlongs Sinking Fund made the running until the home stretch. Passing the stands first time Sinking Fund was followed by Shy, and Kelly just ahead of Friesiand, Fersen, The Buzzer. and Cerne Abbas. Argentic was ninth and Knight of Australia third last. Kelly and Cerne Abbas joined Sinking Fund in the lead at seven furlong post from Friesiand and The Buzzer, running fast on the raiis. Knight of Australia was ninth. With half a mile to go Sinking Fund led from Kelly, The Buzzer, Cerne Abbas, Argentic, Jonathan and Knight of Australia. In a bunched finish The Buzzer prevailed by a short neck from Knight of Australia, who beat Argentic by a neek. Kelly was fourth. GRAFTON HURDLES, of £450; 2 miles. 1 ROYAL MIMIC, 10.1 (J. H. In ■ the run home Stretto won easily by two lengths from Ben Braggie, who beat Maries Acre by one and a-half lengths. Orate was a close fourth followed by Trilliareh, Tray Bit, Lornacre, an'd Paper Slipper. Soon after the start Golden Sheila and Bachelor King fell.
