CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The Plunket Shield match between Canterbury and Otago began yesterday afternoon at Lancaster Park on a true wicket and in fine but dull weather. Canterbury won the toss and Cromb put Otago in. Otago started well, making 50 without loss. Three wickets then fell for two runs, and the last three wickets fell very quickly. Knight Uttley, Mills and Dunning were the only players to make any showing against the Canterbury attack, and the side was out for 172. The two slow bowlers, Burtt and Cromb, were most successful. Canterbury lost Kerr's wicket early, then Gassoii held one end while Menzie's attacked the faster bowling. Two wickets are down for 58. The match will be resumed on Monday morning.
