U.S. AMBASSADOR DIES
Fatal Illness in London BALTIMORE, Dec. 18. The United States Ambassador in" London, Mr. R. W. Bingham, died in the John S. Hopkins hospital after an operation. Mr. Bingham had been United Statea j Ambassador in London since 1933. £orn iv Orange County in 1871, Mr. Bing- : liam received a legal education at the University of North. Carolina and became successively county attorney of Jeiferson County, Kentucky, Mayor of 1 Louiseville (1907) and Chancellor of the J efferson Circuit Court (1911). He was subsequently interested in newspapors and banking. Ha »,lso held the office of regent of the amithsonian Institution at Washington. While stationed in London, Mr. .Bingham vigorously auvocated closer assoeiation between Britain and Ameriea. It was rumoured reeeutJy that the United States Government intended to recall liim, because, although he had been familiar with the details of the situation which ended in King Edward's abdication and hia marriage to the former Mrs. Simpson, h'e neglectel to inform the Governme:. ofiicially on the matter. At the time of his death Mr. Bingham was in the United States on siek leave.
