Hatuma's Christmas Party

At the December meeting of the Ha tuma Women 's Institute, the children were entertained at a very happy Christmas party. Miss Allan presided over a large attendance of members. Several apologies were received. A vote of sympathy was extended ti Mrs Collins, in her illness and to Mi ,» Howard, with wishes for her husband's speedy recovery. Members were reminded of the handicraft exhibition at the Waipukurau A. and P. Show. After the business had been' dealt with the stage curtains were drawn aside, revealing a beautiful tree, gay with balloons, bags of sweets and parcels. Shortly afterwards, to the delight of the children, Father Christmas arrived who, after addressing the children in a humorous strain, asked each child to do him a favour by doing on«. kind deed before he arrived to see them next year. Each child received a parcei — -a bag of sweets and a balloon from the Christmas tree. . . The foilowing short programme was then presented by the children:— Pianoforte solos, Mary Hamilton ann Boy Wilson; highland reel, Margaret Sxnith; songs, Misses Patterson (2), McLellan and Robinson. During the social half-hour, a very interesting debate was held, the suuject being "That the Women 's Institute as an organisation was a failure. " For the affirmative, Mrs F. McRoberts and Miss J. Edgar spoke and for the negative, Mrs P. A. Riddle and Miss Allan. On being put to the vote the negative was carried. A aelicious afternoon tea was served by Mesdames John Wilson, A. Edgar, F. McRoberts and Patterson, and soft drinks were provided for the children. The results of the monthly competi-] tions were: — Best bloom, Mrs Coombes 1, Mrs E. Wilson 2, Miss M. Bimmons 3; novelty coat-hanger, Mrs Howard 1, Miss Simmons 2. Before the meeting closed Mrs Hamilton, speaking on behalf of the children, thanked the members for their Christmas party. The president, Miss Allan, wished the members a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
