Relief of Distress in the North

AUCKLAND, Last Night. In order to relieve Maoris who are living under distressed conditions, the Government is starting farin developmental work at Ngataki, to. which it is expected soon to transfer 12 married men with their faniilies. Families from Te Hapua will live in uutments now in course of erection. It is intended that the men will proceed to brealc in 2700 acres, which will De subdivided into farms of approximately 100 acres each for Maori settlement. The land, which fronts the main road north of Kaitaia and south of Ngataki post oifice, was transferred from the Crown Lands Department to the Native Department for the settlement of unemployed Maoris in the far north. No great difiieulties are expected in making the land suitable for dairy-farming, but the usual procedure will be followed of stocking portions of the area as soon as it is grass^i, so that it will be in good condition when the land is thrown open for settlement.
