LETTER FROM CHINA BRINGS INTERESTING NEWS

The Hawke's Bay friends of Miss Yiolet Bargrove, Matron of the C.M.S. Hospital, Hangchow, China, will be pleased to hear that a letter has reeently been received from her, in which Miss BaTgrove states that she is well. She said that Hangchow was approximately 56 miles by rail from Shanghai and possessed, among other things, a veiy fine bridge and an aerodrome. These, Judging by the air-raid bombing operations, were of particular interest to the Japanese. The air-raid warning siren, Miss Bargrove said, was the most horrible blood-curdling of sounds. At the time of writing, the C.M.S. Hospital, which is one of the largest, if not the largest, hospitals in China, was f ull to overflowing with wounded soldiers from the Shanghai front. Much difficulty was being experienced in the handling of these patients, as the Chinese men are used to male attendhnts and not female nurses, with which this hospital is chiefly staffed.
