Government's Definite Policy
(By Telegraph-
WELLINGTON, This Day. "We have been in communication with the British^Government regarding fpotwear importaiions, " the Prime Minister, the Et. Hon. M. J. Savage, stated to-day. "and I was surprised to see a reference in the cables this morning. I thought that matters of a confidential nature between Governments would be kept as such. We have to take from Britain to the same extent and value that Britain takes from us, but that leaves plenty of room for our own manufacturers. We have to meet our interest bill every year and do all we can to pa y off the principal." When asked to comment on the Australian boot trade, Mr Savage said they were in communication with Australia in regard to trade relationsMps, and hoped to come to finality in the near future, Eeferring to foreign countries, Mr Savage said that the Government 's definite policy was New Zealand industry first, Britain second, the British Commonwealth next, and other nations after that.
