Congestion on Waterfront with Seyeral Arrivals

ALL LABOUR ENGAGED

For tlie past week the Napier waterfront has been extremely busy, with several boats being worked in the roadstead and at Glasgow wharf. All available waterside labour has been called upon for. the period, and while no shortage of labour has been experienced; n number of nou-unior, workers have been empioyed. ~ Congestion commenced at tho begm- i ning of last week, when there were several boats working at the Breakwater and the Inner Harbour, and the Port Lino vessel Port Chalmers, loading for final despatch to London, in the roadstead, The following day the Middlesex also loaded for Iondon. The position was relieved to a certain extent by tlie departure of tho Port Chalmers on Saturday and the Middlesex on Wednesday, but in the meaiitime the Waipawa had; arrived in the roadstead, and one Australian freighter, the Kaikorai, and two coastal vessels, the Poolta and Pukeko, were aischarging at the Glasgow wharf. A third coastal steamer, the Mako, had t0 discharge lier cargo by lighter from the roadstead. Yesterday morning, at 2 a.m., tb© Wainui, witjf general cargo from Southern ports, arrived in the roadstead, and was unable to obtain a berth at the Breakwater, where the Kaikorai and Poolta occupied a side of Glasgow wharf each. She will not be able to berth until early to-morrow morning. The Poolta is due to leayc for Gisborne at midriight, bnt the Kaikorai will not sail. until the end of the week. Further arrivalg requirjng accommodation at the Breakwater will be the Pukeko on Friday, leuving the same night; the Awahou, on Saturday, and the Pakura on Monday. While the Waipawa sails to-night for Auckland, an arrival in the roadstead this morning was the Rangitata, to discharge overseas cargo and load fbr London. Following Friday's wool sale, a further bqsy period may be expected on the waterfront, lasting into the New Year. * - ,
