ATHLETIC TRIALS
Hastings Candidates Try-Out at Nelson Park GOOD TIMES RECORDED Four candidates for inclusion in the New Zealand team to take part in Empire Games at Sydney early next year participated in outings at Nelson Park last evening under the auspices of the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. Though the track was "dead" the performers set up excellent times and should be in first-rate trim for the forthcoming triala at Wellington. Paced over the 440 yards hurdles, Begley covered the distance in 59sec4. ■which is outside the standard time. This was his first outing over the fulf distance, previoua efforts being- ovei 300 yards, and he faulted badly over the third to last hurdle. Fitzsimmons enhanced his prospects for selection with the remarkably good time of l-5secs for the century dash. Mise Eona Tong also was in good form to covei the 80 yards low hurdles in 13 l-5sees. P.. F. Sharpley did not run up to oxpectations, though he recorded th9 good time of 15 3-5 eeconds for the 120 hurdles. He spoilt his run by hitting two obptacles, The candidates are to have another run next Tuesday night when it is ex. pected that a bus-load of competitors will come from Napier to co-operate in providing a stiff field of opposition to the four principals in their various events, as this will be the last opportunity they will have for a training outing before undergoing the trials at Wellington.
