CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

Fixation of Hours . RETAILERS TO DECIDE Fixation of th6 shopping hours for the weeks preceding CHristmas Day and New Year's Day is a matter that is to bo discussed by the exeeutive of the Hastings Retailers' Association within the next day or so. This year the, question of the statutory half-day is involved. The two prineipal holidays this year fall on Saturdays, so that the late nights will be on Friday of each week. Owing to Hastings having a mid-week statutory holiday on Thursday, unless some arrangement is made to have this held earlier in the week, there will be an interruption in the shopping activities that precede Christmas Day. A different position prevails the following week for dhring that period there will be two full days' holiday, Boxing Day being celebrated on the Monday and New Year's Day on the following Saturday, so that in this particular week there will be no statutory half-day on the Thursday.
