Our Own Correspondent.

"Don't Know How Some Make a Living"

■From

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. " There are 53 vehicle authorities for general carriers in the Waipukurau, Patangata and Waipawa counties, and 27 of these are in Waipukurau. I am not satisfied that extra vehicles are required in this district," said Mr P. Skoglund, who presided over a sitting this afternoon in the Waipukurau 'Courlhouse of the No. 2 TranspoTt Licensiug j Authority. Mr Skoglund added that he made it his business not to grant authorities linless he were eertain that there were not sufficieut vehicles available in chb district to cope with the freight oifering. There were quite sufficieut in this district, he felt sure, he said, adding: ' ' One> wonders how some of them make a living." Replying to Mr C. 'Cassidy, who sought one extra vehicle authority to his area lieence, covering the Waipawa, Patangata and Waipukurau counties, and the southern portion of the Hawke's 'Bay County, Mr Skoglund said: "I would rather you make an'at tempt to buy out one of the present oper ators. I know that there are some who are not making award wages and who would be better off if "you employed them as drivers. ' ' The applicant replied that he was prepared to do this and sought the names of operators in this position. Mr Skoglund intimated that he would reply from Wellington. He adjourned the application until after Christmas. Mr . W. Schierning represented the Railways Department at the sitting. "If I granted'this application it would only mean. another authority running against the railways for whien the Railway Department would have to pay compensation ' when it takes the services over," replied Mr Skoglund, in refusing an application by I/r S. J. E. Stephenson, who applied for his area licence to be extended to permit trips to Tomoana and Whakatu and one trlp a fortnight to Napier. Mr W. Oliver applied for four additional vehicle authorities, explainiug that his licences had expired last May and he desired to incorporate them in a licence since taken over. The secretary, Mr W. J, Simms, reported that the there area licences could .be incorporated as suggested, but an application would have to be made for renewal of the route licence. This coursej was agreed upon. J. Winlove and Sons were granted renewals of three licences. The weight limitation was removed ffom the two area licences, but remains on the route licence. Permission was given to tuii, one vehicle to Napier and Hastings.
