In sentencing Alick Bannerman, aged 62, to eigkt years' imprisonment, Mr Justice Markell described kim as a fiend wko bekaved like a savage animal. Bannerman went to tke kome of Mrs Dorothy Hougkton at Mosman, seeking gardening work, and wken ske turned away ke knocked ker down and kicked lier into insensibility. Bannerman did tke same tking witk ker four-year-oTd son. Tkeir lives were jdespaired of for tkree weeks. Fourteen stitckes were inserted in tke woman's face and 100 in tke sou's face, resulting in permanent disfigurement of tke ch'ld. Bannerman expressed regret. He said kis only explanation was tkat ke was a wine drinker and tkat ke was unable to control kimself.
