TRAFFIC AT SPRING SHOW

Criticism from H.B. County Council **A COMPLETE MUDDLE" Some strong criticism regaiding the fcrrahgements for the traffic leaving the Tomoana showgrounds on Peoples Day ■was expressed by members of the H.B. County Council to-day. They regarded the arrangements as being a muddle and responsible for unnecessary protraeted delay aul expressed the hope jthat they woul& not be Tepeated. The ■ubject wcs introduced when it was pointed out that the Main Highways" Board had. taken over the contfol of the traffic in Elwood joad. This, counclllors considered, entitled the council to a just claim for the sealing in bitumen of this parificular xoacL Xn reply to a member the chairman ■ttid he dnl not know who authorised, the arrangements which wero responMble for so much confusion. " It was a Tidiculous state of affairs," itftid Mr M. S. Chambers. If t/he traffic was let out of the gate near Karamu joadj on to that roadway it would.have jbeen a great deal better than having to jo along Elwood road and the railway line to get on ot the Napier road again, which meant travelling over two miles of dusty road for nothing." *1t appears to me that it was dorie Ibr the benefit of the taxis and buses who had the road into Hastings to themselves. The wjhole thing was iniquitious," said Mr S. M. Palmer. Mr B. HaTding said he saw no reason why the traffic for Hastings could not have been let out of one gate and that for Napier out of another, so obviating the long delay which took place. "The whole conception of the attempted traffic control was not 'only qnite wrong but quite hopeless," said Mr E. H. Beamish. "The jam on Elwood road was due to cars ineessantly eutting in from the three gates. The whole arrangement was ill-conceived. If it had first been properly discussed with the people concerned — that is-the A. and P. Society and this council — •omething much better would have been decided upon. I hope that this shall not be attempted again." "It was a complete muddle from start jfco finish," said the chairman, in conoluding the discussion.
