MAKING BEDS IS HEALTHY EXERCISE

Those 'who do not like making beds can console themselves with the fact that it is a. healthy form of exercise. uates an English, correspond3nt. The nced not,. for all that, assume that it does »ot matter how beds are made. Servants are- usually taught to make beds, and so do it properly. Hospital nurses are taught to make them and they do it classically. The woman who helps and the owner of the bed are a?

n rule the worst bed-makers in the world. There are little detafls, such as getting the sheet the right way up. so that the broader hem shows which ia the top in case of confusion. But the main thing is in the arrangement of the blankets and the tucking-up. Blankets should not be put on so that there are three or four edges all together, forming a kind of horse-col-iar to the neck. They should be graded, so that with the turnover the sieeper has a- malleable snbstance to tuck in round his neck and shoulders. The bottom sheet should be tucked in, not only top and bottoin but also be puiled sideways so that it is perfectly taut and sinooth. The top clothes need not be tight. It is uncomfortable to find bedclothes so tight that they press upon the legs' and feet. This is one reason why hospital beds are uncomfortable. Another is that the blankets are al»uys pulled down until tliey aie iwo short. Any bed must be lirmly made, but so arranged that it can look un* tidy if the sieeper so desires.' Finally, the eiderdown should be given clamps, pms. or ties at least if it be made of silk. In any case it has a tendency to slide, and while some people like to show it ofl one pin does not prevent this and it keeps its position if it be desired during the night.
