Yesterday, being stock-sale day, saw quite a number of effigies wheeled about the business area, but one lad, keenest of all, had dressed himself up in the traditional scarecrow garb, mask and all, and canvassed the cause vigorously. Spontaneous Combustion. Evidently caused by the spontaneous combustion of somo substanco that had been buried on the section, a mysterious fire broke ont yesterday while men were working on the new Power Board building in Russell street, Waipukurau. When one of the men had dug a treneh about 18 inches deep, smolce arose from it, and very soon the earth began to burn with a gaseous flame, which burned until it was smotheTed at the end of the day 's work. The fire is attributed either to the phosphorus in sometliin"g (probably rabbit poison) buried there ;about thirty years ago, beforo tho site was built on and when it was part of a farm, or to buried carbide. Transferred To 'Drome, About ten men are now working at the Tukituki stopbank in' Waipukurau, the others having be'en transferred to the aerodrome job, whic(h is now carrying 32 men. Euchre Party. - The ffinal evening of the series of euchre parties organised by the Ormondville Women 's Institute was held in the Peace Memorial Hall. There was a good attendance. Mrs. Gordon Thompson, Napier, annexed the first prize for ladies, and Mr. J. Packer won the gentlemen's trophy. Mrs. I. Harvey and Mr. Gamble won the consolation prizes. A competition for a box of tea was finalised, the winner being Mr. Fredericksen, of Norsewood. Mr. G. S. Chapman supervised the games. An appetising home-made supper was dispensed by members of the Wow-- >'s Institute. Ormondville Golf. The golf-closing competition, a mixed foursome, which was postponed from Labour Day, was played during the week-end on "ihe Ormondville links. Mrs. W. A. Trask and H. O. Baines were the winners, with a seore of 87 — 18 — 69. They each reeeived a trophy presented by Mr. G. Hewald. This closes the 1937 golf season. Visit To Sanatorimn. On Tuesday afternoon, members of the Waipukurau Red Cross paid their inonthly visit to the Sanatoripm, taking comforts, fruit, fiowers, papers, inagaziues and cigarettes for the patients. Those who contributed towards the afternoon were: — Mesdames N. Harris, A. Timms, E. Pejkins, G. Bromell, 1. W. N. Macltie, L. Renner, Pellow, H. Driver, E. Ralph, E. J. Turner, F. Hopkinson, E. Broad, Lunn, H. De Lacy, J. Dunlop. /Soil Survey. 1 Messrs R. B. Tennent, Dir^ctor of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, aud W. C. Robinson, secretary of the head offiee, Wellington, were in Dannevirke yesterday finalising arrangements for the housing in the Publie Trust Office of the soil survey officers, ' who will shortly take up their residence in Dannevirke for a period. As soon as these officers have completed their work it is the intention of the department to appoint a fields ollicers for Soutliern Hawke's Bay, who will have his headquarters in Dannevirke. State Houses. Althougli tenders have not yet been let for t'ho erection of tho first batclx of State houses at Dannevirke, numerous enquiries have been made at tlie post offiee by house-hunters anxicus to be in early with their applications. At present, however, iu arrangements have been made fjr the issue of forms from Dannevirke, but it is expected that the post office hcre will receive instructions in the near future.
