Tlie death oecurred at his home afi Kumeroa on Wednesday morning of Mr. John Inglis Nicol Mackie, at the age of 81 yeaxs, The deceased gentleman had been in indifferent health for some time and of late had occasioned anxiety to his xelatives* , With Ms passing, the district has lost a loved and respected xesident and sympathy from a wide area will be extended the bereaved .family. Born in Alves, Moray-. shire, Scotland, on February 26, 1856, the late Mr, Mackie came to New Zealand in 1871 on the sailing ship City of Auckland. After landing at Auckland he came on by coastal steamer to Napier where he commenced work as a cadefc on the Olrig station. He was employed there for a number of years nntil he shifted to the Maraekakaho station under«the management of the late Mr. Archibald McLeam Continuing Ms farming activities, he later went to the Oak«. burne station to *;manage that property for the* late Mr.' Davis Canning, and later to the Wakarara station which he leased nntil 1892. It was in that year that the late Mr. MacMe came to Kumeroa, taking np the property, "Campfield, ' 5 where he resided until Ms death, With Ms 45 years ' assoeiation with the district, he made many lasting f riendships and he always maintained a keen interest in all forms of sport and pubiic life. For many yeaxs he followed the activities of ithe Hawke's Bay Acclimatisation Society and was a keen fly fisherman. In pubiic life he played a prominent part and served faithfnlly on a number of local bodies for a long period. In addition to being a staunch supporter of the sport of racing, he was a, member of the committee of the Waipukurau Jockey Club for "many years and a steward of the Woodville .Jockey Club. He was elected~a member of the latter club in 1897. to. bo appointed a steward the following yehr. ;* In 1922 he resigned stewardship to be elected a honorary life membCr. . For many years he was an executive officer of the Hawke/s Bay and Woodville A. and P, Associations, being a patron of the Woodville Assoeiation for three years, and one of the oldest members in the district. Displaying a marked interest in local education, he was a member of the Kumeroa School Committee for over 22 years,' being chairman for a long period. Other organisations which benefited as the result of his suppoxt and cpunsel were the Kumeroa Hall committee, the Kumeroa Dog Trial Club (of which he was patron), the Woodville Gun Club (being vice-president and one of the keenest supporters since the inception of the club), the Kumeroa-Hope-lands Sports Club and the Kumeroa branch of the Farmers' Union. Mr. Mackie 's first wife predeceased him in .1896 and he married again in 1998. The deceased gentleman is survived by his wife, one daughter (Mrs. W. H. Purdie, ef Pahiatua), and four sons (Messrs, I. W. N. Mackie, Waipukurau; J. M. Mackie, Gisborne; Olaude Mackie, Kumeroa; and Frank D. Mackie, of Wood-, ville).
