DISPLAY OF POSTERS

... ■ ... i. ■ — U - ■ High School Exhibition USE OF NEW ASSEMBLY HALL Posters by a variety of artists, showing various methods of commercial art, are at present on view in the asaembly hall at the Hastings High School, where a poster exhibition is being held. Altogether 50 posters are on display, among them being 14 loaned for the exhibition by the Hawke's Bay Art Gallery and Museum, Napier, the remainder being the property of the school. The posters are by a variety of artists and show the difi'erent methods of treatment from the conventional to the most modern. The examples are mainly English, but among them afe specimens from Australia, Canada, U.S.A., Hungary, Russia and Sweden. During last week the exhibition was visited by the senior pnpils of the Hastings Central School, and the exhibition will be open to the public today and to-morrow between 1.30 p.m. and 3 p.m. The exhibition is, probably^ the first public function to be held in the new assembly hall since its completion. After two years* work the hall is now practically finished and when the painting at present in progress inside the building is completed, probably toward the end of this week, the hall will be ready for daily use. The interior decoration has been carried out in cream and bluish-grey, and the effect is very striking. The stage panelling, which at first involved some difficulty, has now been arranged satisfactorily, and the radio-gramophone installation has been fitted so that the sound comes out above the stage. The massive carved oak table, the work of Mr. W. I. Marquand, of Hastings, which was presented to the school by the Old Pupils' Association, has now been placed in position in front of the platform, but the chair and lectern, which are part of the association 's gift, are still unfinished. Tho gift of gramophone records from the Carnegie Institute in Ameriea is now on the water, and is expected to arrive next month, shortly beforo the school breaks up.
