Our Own Correspondent)

Borough Council Denies Responsibility

(Frc in

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Responsibility for tho maintenance of railway crossing signs was denied by the Waipukurau orougli Council at the monthly meeting to-night, when a letter from the District Engineer of Railways poiuted out that the St. Andrew's cross sign at the Ruatinawha street crossing had one arm broken, and asked the council to have it attended to. Tho Mayor, Mr I. W. N. Mackie, said that on a past bccasion when a similar poaition had arisen, the council had been advised by the Municipal Association's solicitor that the liability was not the council 's unless the council had. erected the sign itself. Alr Mackie pointed out that the council had not erected this sign and, on his motion, it was agreed to inform the district engineer that the council did not accept a.ny responsibility. The Mayor commented that, as there was a crossing-keeper on duty there, he did npt really think the sign was necessary
