FIRST TEST TO ENGLAND
Australian League Team Lose in Terrific Struggle
FIVE POINTS TO FOUR
(Received 18, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, Oct.^16. England won tbe first Bugby L'eague test at Leeds against Australia, 5—4, after Australia had l'ed at half-time, 4 — 2. The crowd was estimated to be 40,000 and the takings approximately £3982. The match was a terrific struggle in which no quarter was given by either side. The Australians played against the wind in the second half. The destroying angel was Emlyn Jenkins, who repeated history by cutting diagonally toward the Australian corner. With the defence beaten, he dived but was too far out for a goal to be kicked. However, it was sufficient to givo Fngland victory. There was no other score. Australia 's four poiuts came from two goals kicked by Beaton, while Martin Hodgson kicked a goal for England. Thew were great Australian movements in which Beaton, McKinnon and Beardon figured, but chances were lost eithor through dropped passes or forward onesTh« English forwards crowded the Australian inside backs, watching Norman particularly. Belshaw and Ward had a kicking duel which ended in Ward dashing for the right wing to set his backs going, but the dash was foiled by England 's deadly defence.
