Roads Defined By Borough Council A matter of special interest to the farming community which Hastings serves as the principal centre was discussed at the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last evening when a report was tabled by tho Town Cierk, Mr. Noel C. Harding, on the questiun of a, stock route. Contrary to expactations there apparently is not a dehned stock route, for a careful search of the minntes failed to reveal that any council in the past had at any timo specified any particuiar route. Mr, Harding pointed out that from time to time the question of driving stock in the borough had been dealt with as regards to specific streets, and m consequence streets tptally exempt from the driving of stock under any conditipns were as foilow: — Heretaunga street, between Wiliowpark rqad and Nelson /Street; Rufesell street, between Eastbourne street and Queen street j Queen street between Russell and Warren streets • Karamu road, between Avenue road and Eastbourne street j Market street, between Queen and Eastbourne streets, ^ Then again cattle could be driven only when on the leash, and between 5 p.in. and 6 p.m. and between sunrise and 8 a.m. on the following streets : — All streets in the No. 1 area ; Nelson street, except that portion north of Erederick street; Tomoana road; Erederick street, from Nelson street to Pakowhai road ; Gordon road ; Kelwood road, from Heretaunga street t q Louis street, "There is adequate access, from any dire|tion, to Stortford Lodge saleyards and to the freezing works via boundary roads and back streets, and evidently tiro council did not deem it necessary to set out and define a stock route," said Mr Harding. "It is jupt a question now as to whether or not this- is neqessary. If so, it should bo quite easy to define a suitable stock route from the entrances pf the borough; which could be advertiped, anc notice boards erected in the various streets, if such a qourse is deemed necpssary.

"There is no neea to have stock driven thrpugh the town at all," eommented the Mayor, Mr i. A. Maddison, when moving that there be a definec stock route, embracing only the boundary roads 'of borough to the Stortford Lodge saleyards and to the Tomoana Freezing Works. He said that it wag most desirous that (stock ehould be kept out of the town, particularly sp now that tho hedges at Cornwall Park had been removed and that many residents were follovping the lead so given while no doubt many otbers would in timo probably be dojng away with fences ajtogether jn frpnt pt their housos.
