DINNER GIVEN IN HONOUR OF W.D.F.U. PRESIDENT

Mrs J. E. Drake, of Berwick, Otago, the Dominion president of the Women' s Division of the Farmers' Union, who visited Hastings during the week-end, was the guest of honour at a dinner held in the Pasadena tearooms, Hastings. Mrs E. Honeybun, president of the provincial executive, introduced Mrs' Drake to the guests and asked her to accept a lovely shoulder spray of white freesias. red anemones and maidenhair fern, a gift from the Hastings branch of the W.D.F.U. On behalf of the members of the Hastings Women' s Community Club, Mrs H. Lovell-Smith, the secretary presented to Mrs Drake a nosegay of pale pink sweet peas. Mrs G. A. Maddison, the Mayoress, who was also the recipient of a lovely spray of cream hyacinths, purple pan-

sies and ferix, welcolned Mrs Drake on behalf of th4 citizens of Hastings, and said that sHe hoped her stay in the district would be happy and profitable aad her tour in the North Island most suceessful. Mrs D. J. Riggir spoke on behalf of the Northern Hawke's Bay Federation of Women's Institutes, and said that it had been a great pleasure to hear Mrs Drake' s address in the aftern:>oa She hoped that the amalgamation of the W.D.F.U. and the women's institutes would be made possibie at some future time. After the other guests had spoken on behalf of the organisations which they represented, Mrs Drake thanked everyone for the warm welcome she had received, saying also how much she had enjoyed her visit to Hawke's Bay and that she hoped the people in the district would all live up to the beautiful country in which they had tbr.ii homes. In concluding a very b right and happy speech, Mrs Drake said that she would carry back very many happy memories of her sojourn in the district and that she was only sorry that it was of such short duration. Those present were Mrs E. Honeybun,^ president of the Northern H.B. provincial executive of the W.D.F.U., Mrs John Joll, the secretary and Mrs H. Thompson, who arranged the dinner party. Also Mrs J. M. Joll and Mrs L. W. Goldfinch, president and secretary of tha Hastings branch, Mrs Maddison, Mayoress, Mrs A. F. Glenny and Mrs F. Deans, of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild, Mrs H. LovellSmith and Mrs R. Puflett, of tho Plastings Women's Community Club, Mrs J. li. Piekering and Mrs F. J. Hull, of the Hastings Red Cross. Mrs D. J. Riggir and Mrs C. J. Baker, of the Northern Hawke's Bay Federation of Women's Institutes. The following branch representatives were present : Mrs Boyd and Miss Lowe (Sherenden), Mrs A. D. Wallace and Miss G. Beachen (Waipukurau), Mrs G. Tod (Nuhaka), Mrs Talbot (Mangatahi) and Mrs, A. H. Hope (Porangahau).
