FOURTH BIRTHDAY OF H.N. GARDEN CIRCLE
The members of the Havelock North Women's Institute gardening circle celebrated their fourth birthday at the home of the circle leader, Mrs W. Bridgman, Dighton, Havelock North, when a most delightful time was spent by the many members present. Mrs Bridgman .extended a hearfcy welcome to all members and also to the guests of the circle, Mesdaifles Chapman-Tayler (president of the institute). Holmes, Clark and Miss Lockyer. Apologies were received from Mrs Honeybun, Mrs May and Mrs L. Harvey. A novel competition arranged by the hostess was held. A grandmother's nosegay, with a bright collection. of 28 difi'erent species of fiowers was arranged haphazard in a pitcher and members were allowed to inspcv.t it. It was removed and a test of memory followed, Mrs Buck being the winner with 25 correct names. Anotlier competition was the making of a shoulder spray in five minutos, each competitor being given six fiowers and greenery. This was judged by Mrs C. Clark, who gave the following results : Mrs de Montalk 1, Mrs Lockyer 2. The prizes, donated by Mrs Bridgeman. were most welcome and were large bundles .of seasonable plants. A deficious tea was then enjoyed and the four candles on the birthday cake were lit by Mrs Chapman-Taylor and Mrs O. Clark cut the cake and in doing so, wished the circle many more happy birthdays. The cake was decorated to represe'nt a garden, with gravelled patb, house. summer house, motor shed, beds with growing fiowers, an archway of treilis work with climbing pink roses and blue fiowers, the whole being surrounded by a dainty fence. A small car and tiny figures looked realistic, and the cake was most appropriately decorated for the occasion. After tea an adjournment was made to the drawing room which was fragrant with lovely spring fiowers and a community sing with Mrs Bnck in charge and Mrs Leedom at the piano was enjoyed, many o}d favourites being included. Mrs Buck sang two deligbfcful solos. Before dispersing Mrs L. "W. Goldfinch proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the hostess for the delightful time everyone had so much enjoyed, and Mrs W. Bridgman later thanked them. The members were reminded that an invitation had been received to visit the council nurseries in Napier next month, the offer having been accepted, as many members intimated their intention to be present.
