FATALLY BURNED
Former Mayoress of Masterton (By Telearaph -Press A^sociation.) MASTERTON, Last Night, Fatal burns were received by Mrs W. n. Jackson, aged 71, a well-known* resident of Masterton, in a iire which badly gutted her residence in Chapei street at an early hour this morning. Mr and Mrs Jackson were awakened by the explosion of the gas meter to iind the greater part of tlie house, a two-storey one, ablaze. Mrs Jackson collapsed on the,, landing of the stairs and was earried out of the burning house by her husbaud. She was very badly burned, however, 1 and with her husband was taken to hospital, where she died at about si* o'clock to-night. Mr Jackson, who suffered minor burns, was discbarged later in the day. For a period during the war he was Mayor of Masterton, and as Mayoress Mrs Jackson rendered signal service, particularly in work of a patriotic nature.
