COUNCIL'S AFFAIRS DISCUSSED
(From
WAIPUKURAU, Bast JMgnt. At the monthly meeting of the. Waipukurau •County Councii yestirday, there were present Councillors A. C. Russell (chairman), L. M. Monckton, A. W. Elliott, W. T. Edgecombe, M. Tansey, W. T. Wright, J. A. Swinburne, an'd the clerk-engineer, Mr. 11 .15. Price. An apology was received from Cr. P. F. Wall. The town clerk wrote applying for a grant towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Waipukurau cemetery. — it was decided to make a grant of £10. Regarding heavy traffic fees, the Hawke's Bay County Councii wrote advising that the boroughs had advised that they were agreeable to the basis of allocation being the satne as previously — i.c., boroughs one-third, counties two-thirds. W ould the Waipukurau County agree? The councii had been in touch with the Minister of Transpoi't for tlie purpose of finding out if the Government intended to deal with the matter of heavy traffic fees, but so far nothiiig definite was known, Failing further v information, as the previous agreement between the counties had expired, it may be necessary to hold a joint counties' contference shortly. — The letter was received, and the chairman and clerk were appointed tp attend the proposed conference, when and if it took place. A copy of a letter from the CommiSsioner of Transport to Traffic Inspector W. E. Yates, stated that it had been noted that the Hawke's Bay County Councii had decided that the weight qf the crate would not be included in the laden weight where stock was being transported in the Hawke's Bay County Councii. The matter had been refered to the Main Higliways Board which was definitely opposed to the exclusion ' of the weight of sheep crates from gross weights for "the purpose of road classifications under the Heavy Motor Vehicles Regulations. The board had asked the Commissioner to instruct the councii to enforce the regulations, including the weights oi crates. — The clerk was instructed to advise local truck operators of the board' s instructions. Tbe* New Zealand Drjvers' aiid Related Trades Industrial Association of Workers wrote asking the councii to eonsider the reinstatement of a driver who had been disinissed, after 13 years of service with the councii. It was understood all drivers had been dismissed, but all except the man referred t0 had been reinstated. It was unoerstood that the reason for not reinstatmg this man was that the councii required a man able to do mechanical repairs.— Ip. reply to a question by Mr. Edgecombe, the clerk said that there were no permanent drivers engaged by | the county at present, except one grader driver. It was decided that the clerk should write to the association malcing tlie position qujte clear. A circular from the New Zealand Counties' Association asked the county to i'rame its viewg on locaj body amab gamation, and to accord the matter urgency, as the associaition would be called upon shortly to give evidenc'e before a Parlianientary Conunission. — Councillors unanimously agreed that they were opposed to amalgamation, ancl tbo chairman and clerk were autliorised to go to Wellington, if necessary, and give cvidence before tbe Pariiainentary Commission, Tbe clerk was also instructed to put the couneil's views in wnting and submit the docum^nt lor the approva} of the chairman -and deputy-chairmau before sefldiug jt to IVellington.
