Makotuku W.C.T.U. The monthly meeting of the Makotuku brancli of the Womeu's Christian 'i'emperance Union was held at tho residence of Mrs. Burnett. Mrs. Dally presided. Awangements were made for the tenth birthday celebrations, to be held at Mrs. Burnett' s residence this month. The Rev. A. E. Waite, of Dannevirke, will deiiver an address, to wliich non-members will be welcomed. Afternoon tea was dispeused by tlie hostess , Euohre At Makotuku. The weekly euchre tournament held in the public hall. Makotuku, by 'the Makotuku branch of the Labqur Party was well atteuded. Prize-wmners were Mr. F. Mortensen (Noisewood) 1; Mrs. Mortensen, Mrs. Oarruthers and Miss Palmer tied for second prize with 9| wins each, In the play-off the tormer won. Messrs. F. Mortensen (Norsewood) and 11 . Little (Makotuku) tied for tlie men's prize with 10^ wins each, Mr. F. Mortensen eventually winning. The games were supervised oy Mr. J. J. Murphy. Crew Timber For Own, House. I11 these days a man is rarely able to build his own home from timber grown on his property, but Mr. J. Castles, of Whetakura, is planning to do this. Jn the busb on his property trees have been felled, the huge logs hauled by means of a caterpillar tractor, placed on motor lornes, and transported to a timber mill in Dannevirke. Here the logs, all rimu, are sawn into timber for building purposes, and then taken back on the lorries to the property, whare it is stacked to season in readiness for the new home. Uontinued wet weather has somewhat delayed operations but the bush falling will probably he concluded this week. Ditin't Like The Confererjce. The belief that the representatives of small local bodies were often overawed and over-ruledi by the "big-wigs" at conferences was expressed at the Waipukurau County Couneil's meeting on Saturday by the chairman, Mr. A. C. Russell, when he referred to the discussion on local-body amalgamation at the recent Counties' Couference he had attended. No piatter wliat the opinions of tlie smaller bodies were, tlie speeches of these "big-wigs" were greeted with shuffling of feet and clapping of hands, he said. "Farmers' Union conferences are just the same," commented auother couucillor. "I didn't like the couference much, and I don't want to attend another," stated the chairman. Poragahau Ladies' Guild. The monthly meeting of the Porangahau Ladies ' Guild Was presided over by Mrs Canning. A large quantity of work for the coming sale of work was brought in and arrangements were made for stall-holders. The Bev. Mr Niblock gave a further address on "Psychology." The hostesses, Mesdames Hunter and O'Connor and Misses Green and Sargisson,, served a dainty afternoon tea. Takapau Preshyterlau Guild. The monthly meeting oi the Takapau Presbyterian Church Ladies' Guild aud P.W.M.U. was held at the Manse. Mrs H. Kilford presided over a fair attendance of memhers. The P.W.M.U, meeting opened with a reading from the Scriptures and prayer. A missionary letter from. India was read and commented upon. The Bev. H. Scott gave an address regardiug the Presbyterian Church 's official publication. It was hoped to increase its circulation among church members,
