CELTIC VICTORIOUS Pirates Downed by Margin of Five Points SATURDAY'S RESULTS A last-minute try Jby Reid earned Oeltic the Lane |Cup in the match against Pirates at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday. The game was interesting, and although for a period in the first half the players slackened their eflorts, the second spell produced many exciting movements, Celtio winning by 13 points to eight. The teams wrere as follow; — Oeltic: Halligan, Gibb, Pullen, Garvev, Geddes, lteid, Tomoana, Bower, MoHardy, Baker, Mataira, Tomoana, Hannigan, Bennett, McCourt. Pirates. — Mapuhi, Christie. Thompson, Yates, Morgun Dowrick, Lister, Hill, McKenzie, Hardgrave, oLpdell (2) Gilroy, Keeble and Frazer. a Play was ragged at the beginning of the game, several loose rushes by the home forwards breaking down through bad handling or Jack of support. 'Jlie Blacks, however, held a territorial advantaye up to the time Dowrick gave tliem three points from a neat penalty goal. Soon after tho Pirates backs commenced a rush, but Thompson, with two men outside hiru unopposed threw away a certain Iry by kicking. Tomoana secured the ball but. was" well caught by McKenzie and pulled over the linej from the resultiug scrum Oeltic cleared. Gilroy left the field and was replaced "by Thompson, It was the last game of the season, and the sun was hot, so the players were not at all disposed to exert themselves unduly. This apparent langour combined with good tackling by both sides, slowed up the game considerabJy, and Celtic held a slight advantage. Geddes narrowly missed a field goal. The score was unchangjed at the interval, Shortly after the change-over, a Celtic forward rush down the linfe found a gap in the Pirate del'ence, and Hannigan collected to go ucross in the corner for an easy try. The kick missed. Lister was then prominent in a 6olo run down the line, but he failcd to recover his short puut; he then fooled the fast-breaking Celtic forwards by allowing them to run past him and then kicking through a line-out. Dowrick missed a penalty from an easy position, and McKenzie crossed, only to be recalled for a knock-on and Celtic cleared. ■ Pirates, who had w.ikened up, wero due to score, however, and the bounce favoured Thompson as the wiuger collected a stray kick and_ crossed well out. Hardgrave missed the kick. Beid gained the applause of the j crowd for a pretty solo run from his j own Jine to the Pirata twentyufive, dodging clcverly past several tackles. Soon after Bowers evened the score with a try, and Pullen cohverted with j an easy kick. j Pirates were not yet doue, however, and when Thompson had scored ifc ap1 peared that the Blacks had pulled otf i the trophy.
