WELLINGTON, Last Night. Action is being taken by the Government to safeguard the interests of manufacturers and employeos in indus* tries wliieh are being harmfully aft'ented by excessive importations, aceording to a statement made to-night by the ir'rime SliaiHter, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. "Discussons have taken place between the Government and represcntatives botli of employers and emplovees in the industries," Mr Savage said, "and the steps to be taken are being worked out in dctail. "While ensuring that our trade and relations* with the United Kingdom are being fully and carefully safeguarded, the Government is determined not to allow men and women employed in the Dominion to be thrown out of werk through the importation of commoditLes that should and can be made in the Dominion. ' • The Government realises the urgeney of the matter, and I hope to be able to make a statement setting out the proeedure to be followed within a fortnigbt."
