Cartage Costs Too High at Waipukurau

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Prospects at the moment were not good for obtaining a low fr^ight rate for the forwarding of bottled milk by rail, but the matter was still being pursued and, if a satisfactory agreement could be reached, the matter would be given further attention, said a leL ter from the Health Department read at the monthly meeting of the Waipukurau School Coffimittee. The Department thanked Mr F. Sayliss, the secretary of the committee, for submitting prices for cartage of milk from stations to schools at Otane, Waipukurau . and Takapau, and for the return of empty bottles. The cost at Waipukurau seemed heavy, the letter went on, and added approximately 5d a gallon to the milk at the Waipukurau station. • Mr F. Haycock presided over Messr.s C. Cassidy, J. White, V. King, A. (Jhambers, J. Blair, F. Sayliss (secretary) and V. Parsons (headmaster). Apologies were received from Mes.srs T. Spencer and L. Renner. The headmaster reported that the roll in the primary school was now 400 and in the secondary school 58. The grading of the school for 1938 depended on the average roll for the first four.weeks of the current term. The average roll had reached 396, but fco aifect the grading the average required was 401. "The work at the high school was nearly completed. The fence has bden renewed, the garden plots put in order, and the work at the rear of the high school grounds*is now almost iinishcd. "Tennis nets are required for the courts at the -High School. The sports fund is able to provide one net, but two aro necessary if the children are to re« ceive the full benefit of the courts. "The number of children attending the football mateh at Napier was 108. The train arrangements were exceJlent, and the handling of. tho children by the Rugby Union efficials at Napier efficiently carried out."
