GUILD MEMBERS VISIT HAVELOCK GARDEN

A pai-ticularly delightful afternoon was eujoyed yesterday by members of the garden circle of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild, when, at the invitation of Mrs F. L. Bone they journeyed to her home on the Havelock hills to see the garden. The spacious garden was most beautiful and the rare rock plants and numerous bright annuals and flowering shrubs were the envy of everyone present. As the garden is out of the reaeh of frosts many of the plants which were flowering were far ahead of those which can be grown in Hastings and these were viewed with much interest. Dnfortunately Mrs Bone was unable to be present through illness, -but the guests, who numbered about 50, were charmingly entertained and shown round the garden by Mrs Bone's granddaughter, Miss Margaret Carridous, who was assisted by Mrs F. Vaughan. From the garden a most wonderful vieiv of Havelock, Hastings, Napier, and the bay can be seen, and a very pleasant two hours was speut in these lovely 6urroundiugs. Aiteruoon tea was brought by the members and after tliis had been enjoyed, the afternoon's competition was judged by Mrs J. U. Tosswill, assisted by Mrs E. Appleby. Eacb member had worn a coat spray which she had made and the reaulfc of the judging of these was as folknvs: Mrs A. Kirkpatrick 1, Mrs C. R. Bayly 2. Miss Shaw 3. The circle leader, Mrs J. B. Pickertng expressed regret at Mrs Bone's abseuce and asked Mrs Vaughan to convey to their hostess the very sincere thanks oi the members for the invitation to visit her garden and also their best wishes fo a speedy recovery. Mrs Pickering reminded members that on Monday, October 4, a visit uuuld be made to Mr P. F. Huuter's garden in Havelock North, when a bus would take the members as usual. Pleasure was also felt at having present Mrs Harold Davies, who through illhealth, has been unable to attend meetings lor a long time, and Mrs Pickering reminded everyone that it was largely through Mrs Davies' work as secretary for several years, that the circle was uow such a successful oue.
