The following licences, with fees re•ceived in parentheses, • were issued by the Waipukurau Borough Oouncil for the five weeks from August 16:— 20 heavy traffic licences (£135 13/8), 32 motor* drivers' licences (£7 17/6). Borough Council Reproved. Stating-that he considered, as a local business man and- a ratepayer, he should. have had a ehanee to quote for supplying a batch of eighteen trees recently planted by the Waipukurau Borough Council, a local. nurseryman cbmplained by letter to the Borough Council meeting last night that he had not had this opportunity. Asked to explain how it was that the local man had not quoted, Mr. H. B. Smart, town clerk, said that, as he was going to Hastings on other business, he had been asked by a residen't who . had donated some trees for planting in Flefn-' ing road, if' he would look out for some trees to fill gaps in Porangahau road. He had made inquiries, .but had found the type of tree required was unobtainable in either Hastings or Napier. He had thought of Mr, Ellison, but did not think it lilcely he would have had them in stock if the town nurseries had not. The ti'ees had finally been obtained from Wanganui by a Napier nurseryman, at a cost of a'bout 36/-. Naturally, where possible, local business men were always given preference if qual- 1 ity and price were right. At the Mayor 's suggestion, Mr. Smart agreed to explain the matter to Mr. Ellison.
