Chinese Aerial Attack FIGHTING IN SHANGHAI AREA

WELLINGTON, This Day. The Chinese Consul has received the following cablegram from Nanking: — "Heralded by intense shelling and bombing of the Chinese positions, the Japanese renewed their thrust yester day tow%rds Lotien and Linhang, on tho Shanghai-Tachang motor road. Sharp encounters oecurred at points eastward of the highway, but the attackers made no progress. "Japanese assaults on the Chinese right flank in the Chapei area were also repulsed. "It is officially stated that Chineso bombers sank a Japanese destroyer off Swatow. " Chinese planes beat off eight Japanese planes from Canton. No bombs were dropped."
