Work on Ngaruroro River Control

ENGINEER'S REPORT

An amount of £39,281 bas been expended to date on the Ngaruroro river control scheme. A total of 205,326 cubic yards of material has been handled on the various earthWorks. Ofthis 112,000 yards has been deposited on the south bank, 60,690 yards on the north bank, and 32,500 yards on the overflow works. At to-day 's meeting of the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board the engineer, Mr G. Rochiort4 reported as under: — A third carthwork gang was started on "August 10, and the output for tne month was 31,391 cubic yards, of which 21,093 cubic yards were put on tho north levee and 10,298 cubic yards on the south. The eost was 1/11.2 pence per ('ubie vard. Scoop teams have been worked on the Pakowhai drain; 27 chains of drain were made and 2,638 cubic yards shifted at a cost of 1/8 per cubic yard. Tlie Bay City completed work on the north side of the' overflow and shifted to the south side; 23 chains of drains were made and 3,480 cubic yards were shifted, of which 1,280 cubic yards were put on the north levee of the overflow, and 2,200 cubic yards on the south. The cost of this work was 11.4 pence per cubic yard. A total of 3,176 cubic yards was pUt on the levee at Orbell 's at a cost of 1/6 per cubic yard. About 20 chains were cleared at Chesterhope, and general clearing has been carried out at Waima and in tho Puninga swainp. A total of 256 chains of plaiiting was completed during the period, 88 chains on the north and 168 chains on tho south. The total planting done is 319 chains, and the cost 19.10d per chain. Groyne work at Fernhill has been extended upstream to straighteu the ehannel above Hiekson's corner. and as a result the normal flow of the river liae moved towards mid-stream.
