BUTTER UP IN PRICE
Increase Of ld. a lb. P0TAT0ES ALSO DEARER An increase in the retail price of butter in Hastings and Napier was made this morning, the rise amounting to 3d a lb, Butter is now selling in Hastings at 1/5 a lb, and in Napier at 31/4$ a ib, Hue increase being by the same amount in each case. Tho increased price has been brouglit about by the Government 's decision-to lix the wholesale rate at l/2i a lb. for first grade. Retailers and dairy fae-tc-ry secretaries anticipate that an increase of ld a lb. will be fairly general. As yet the Government had dorie nothiug to interfere with the retail prices of butter, said Mr. H. R. von Dadciszeii, secretary of the Heretaunga Co-operative Dairy Company this morning, but he tliought it probable that something imgbt be done in this direetion later, althougk he had no ofiieiul udvice on the poxnt. This/ latest increase, followiiig s'j ciosely on the rise oi ld a lb. for beef and mutton in Hastings^ i% going to muke a very appreeiable dxfferenco in family household budgets this week. Potatces have also shov/n a 5lxarp risu in price. The retail price in Hastings this morning amounted to 13/6 a cwt., which is an increase by 3/6 a cwt. on what they were ten days ago. The price was then 10/- ,a cwt. Bupplies of potatoesi are scarce in all paris of the North Island, although they are now cheaper in the South. It is difficult to account for the shortage in view o.f the fairly substantial shipments . that have been made north recently. .-
