B. Fawqett comqiented on the grout increase in tho human race over the last 2Q0 years. He said European pqoples had multiplicd sixfold since 1700. He emphasised tliat only in the last 60 yearg Jiad there been any considerable increase in South America. The rhtes of increase in the early dceades of this qcntury were quite comparable with those of tho United States in the latter half of last century. New Zealand and Australia in the same decades had similar proportional inereases. Nevertheless, -the total population of all ands in the south temperate zone had not yet reaclied 50 millions and the arca of good cultivable land in that region was so much smaller than that of the great northern regions that they were nevep likely to be more than minor areas of world population. Professor Fawcett ascribes migration to towns chiefly to more effieiqnt tools and methods. A diminution in the proportion of the world '3 workqrs was required to satisfy the primary need of food, clothing and shelter, in addition to domination of the human desite for better conditions of lifo.
