Sir,-r-A lot- has been said abogt neglected gutters in Waipukurau 's main 'street. But, Sir, could not something be said about some of tfie shopkeepers and assistqnts who six mornings in thq week sweep the garbage into those gutters? Are shopkeepers allowed to do this in Hastings?— Yours. etc..
Waipukurau, August 30, 1937. [Section 574 of the Hastings borough by-laws contains several clauses that , effectively prohibit the placing of shop siveepiugs aud rubbish in the gutters or ou the streels. It is di'stinctly stated that uo dust, dirt or other refuse, from auv shop or business premisea, shall bo swept, tlywn, ior deposited on any street, It is further stated that no person other than a borough workman, shall s'weep any dust or refuse acroas or from any footpath between the hours of 8.30 in the mornlng and seven o'elock in the evoning. It is thus permissible for a shoplteeper to sweep the footpath during tho night or eacly morniug b.ut he is not pCrmitted at any timo to sweep or deposit rubbish from his shop on to the street or into tho gutlor. After 8.30 every morning, except feluiiday, borough workiuen sweep and collect all street liitor that has aecumulaied in the gutters. Any shopkeeper, however, found to have put refuse in the guttcr would be liable to prosecutiou. — Editor.]
