Houslng Shortage at Wairoa. The housing shortage in Wairoa was mentioned at the monthly meeting of the Wairoa Borougli Council. The Mayor, Mr H. L. Harker, was of the opinion that the council sliould continue to ask the Government to build houses for tlieir employees, A list of all the Government servants is to be compiled and sent to the Minister in charge of every Department. It was stated that there must be 15 to 18 Government servants in private houses. Stock Transit by Rau. Mr A. Orton, business agent for the New Zealand Railways, is visiting Wairoa. He expressed satisfaction with the supportegiven to the goods service during the week that it has been operating. The service was proving popular with stock owners, he said, and there was ample evidence that the traffic was going to be heavy. Waipawa Ball. To-night, in the Municipal Theatre, Waipawa, the High School Old Pupils' Association will hold its hrst annual ball. This event has been looked forward to for some time now, and ai'ter several wqeks of preparation the eommittee is confident it can furnish an excellent night 's entertainment, and a programme is being prepared to provide for everyone. Excellent music will be supplied by the New Majcstie Orchestra. The committee has purchased hundreds of paper hats, streamers, squeakers, clappers and trumpets, and these will be distributed during the evening adding greatly to the gaiety. This is the first danee of pny magnitnde attompted by the association, and a cordial invitation is cxtcndod to all dancers to be present, particularly is it lioped that ex-pupils of the school who niay not have joiucd up as yet will endeavour to atteud. Ongaonga War Memorial. A meeting of the Ongaonga War Memorial Committee was held in the hall on Monday evening. Mr Mact'arlan6 was in tlie chair and the chief business was a discussion on tlie iustulment of a satisfuctory water supply. Though it is tliougkt that there, will uot be enough funds in hand at presenc, it was decided to call for tenders aud go akead with the work and then ".all for subscriptions to supply the deliciency, Taradale Card Eyening, The weekly card evening of the Taradale Social Club was again very successful. The prize-winners were Mre T. Chip 1, Miss Trubskoe 2, and Miss N, Smith 3. Takapau School. At the monthly meeting of the Takapau School Committee the followuig wero present: Messrs N. M. Paulsen (chairman), J. A. Graut (hon. secretary), D. Vesty, J. Thomsen, E. IT. Hillier, D. McMillan, D. McSporrin and the lieadmaster, Mr T. Taylor. The headmaster's reporfc showed a roll attendance of lGt). It was decided to improve the section recently purcnased. Messrs Paulsen and Graut were appointed to bring down a report on tne supply of milk to the school children. Accounts to the amount of £25 were passed for payment, and a vote of thauks was tendered to Mr E. II. Hillier for supervising the work carried out in the school playing area. August Weather. The rainfall for August at Waipukurau totals 2.06 inches. Rain fell on 12 days, the heaviest fall being 41 points on August 25. Eor the corresponding month last year the fall was 1.25 xnches, there being seven wet days. Eor the eight months of the year the total fall is 15.79 inches, compared with 27.97 inches for the same period in 1936. There have been six frosts in the past month, six degrees being the highest, while in August last' year seven frosts wei'e experienced, the highest being eleven degrees.
