COUNTRY PEOPLE'S DISADVANTAGE
"These country people are at a disadvantage in getting their licences, as they have ,to go to Napier to obtain them," pointed out Mr. W. Selwyn Averill in the Hastings Magistrate 's Court this morning when defending a motorist who, he pleaded, had been caught by the inspector while" driving to Napier to get a licence. ' 1 They have time before the regulationa are enforced," said the magistrate, Mr, J. Miller. "But even in town we usually leave it until the last moment," interposed Mr. D. P. Scannell. The excu^e that they lived in the country, was brought forward on behalf of a number of other offenders until, when Mr. Miller was told by one offender. that he lived in Napier, he exclaimed: "Well, here is one man at last who does not live in the country." Later the magistrate remarked that he thought country people should be fined just the same as otfier s.
