Waipawa - County Engineer's ■ Report

, WAIPAWA, Last Night. At the monthly meeting of the Waipawa County Otmncil the engineer, Mr V. E. DdugU'a's, reported as follows AVaipawa. Itiding Grading and general maintenance work was carried out. The approaches to Smith's bridge were repaired and a :drain was cleared On Butler's road. Ongaonga, xidingi— - Grading and metailing wero carried out on Gardner and Yoeman's road, North Bloek road, Huli's Slab, McLeod's road and Springhill. The Ley land lorry has now moved out of this riding. McLeod's xoad Will be completed when the crusher is set up at Fairfield. The Lookout and Hinerua roads reqiiire metailing. Some patching will be done shortly and remetalling could be carried out jf apd when the crusher is set up at Fletcher's crossing. Csinton Riding: — The Leyland lorry is now working in this riding, and metailing has been done on Severinsen's road, Ashcott- Waipukurau road, iVJ-ili road, Milne's road, and MakaretuClinton road. . The cleoning of watertabies, improvement of corners, eto., on Milna's road, commenced last month, was completed. Necessary work, mclilding the cleaning of blocked culverts, was carried out on Mill road. Takapau Riding. — Grading and general maintenance were carried out, metal being spread on the Otawhao Biock road, and Takau sido streets. These latter are now completed. Main Bfidges. Fletcher's Crossing Bridge. — Proposals covering repairs t'o the bridge are being prepared for submiSsion to tho Public Works Department for their consideration. Work has been commenced ou the retaining -wall i,of Mill road. The oouncil's application for the declaration of the Ongaonga-Waipukurau road as a main highway Was not recommended b.y the No 5 District Highways CounciJ. Proposals have been submitted to the Main Highways Board covering the supply of sealing chips for the four miies of highway to be sealed during the coming summer. If the proposals are approved in the near future it wouitl be advisable to call tenders' before the fiext meeting .of the council. The question of the next eet-up of the crushing plant should noW fae considered by the council. A total of 2000 pinus insignis trees have been planted in the Sherwood plantation as authorlsed by the council. Under the advice of Cr. Thomsen ali lower limbs are being removed and the whole plantation cleared up. Main Highways. • Napier-Ralmerston State Highway. — Considerable patching jvas carried out during the month, and the road as far as is possible considering the state of the sealing, has been maintained in good order. Metal was spread by the eontractor on the edges of the sealing through Pukehou. Further progress was made with the replacement of defective planking on tho Waipawa traffie bridge when an additional 96 planks I were replaced, making a total of 120 m two months. Hand-rails were strengthened and bolted as required. It is intended to instal a further 60 deck planks. Fernhill-Takapau Main Highway.—Grading and general maintenance, patching and metailing were carried out. A mulch coat was spread on the Takapau end of the road. The crossing over the. Lindsay water race was patched and improved. Though approval of the council's recommendation of the acceptance of the tender for reconstruction of one mile through Tikokino has been received, monetary authority has not yet been issued and work is consequently held up. Grading work was done on the WaipawaI'ourere, Waipawa-Tikokino and Wai-pawa-Ungaonga section of the highway. . VV aipukurau - Matamau Highway.— Grading, general maintenance and retnetalling were done. A mulch coat was spread from the Waipukurau 1 county boundary. The approach to the Manawatu bridge was widened and improved. A Bafety railing was also instalied at this efid.
