The tender of Messrs Andrews and Hon, Napier, for 840 cubic yards of lil'ing and 50 cubic yards of metal at Kopina's culvert, on the PorangahauWaipukurau main highway, was accep* ted ty the Patangata County Council at yesterday 's meting. Business Increase. At the Wairoa Power Board meeting on Monday, the chairman, Mr. O. Y» Chamberlain, reported that during tho June quarter the board sold £854worth more curreilt than in the corresponding quarter last year. The increased cost to Iho board was £384, leaving a profit of £470. i Larnbing. Thc lambing is making good progrdss in parts of the Wairoa County, tkere being a good many Southdowns. Tuhara and Clydebank kave a gOod many, and all are doing well, the winter being idcal, and barring many bad days like Saturdav, Wairoa should achieve a record. In somo areas tkere is a larger proportion of 'twins than for j-ears past. School Iniprovements. Tho Wairoa District High Schoo! Committee has receivcd word that a grant has been made for the erection of two class-rooms and a cloak-room, as well as a detaclied open-air building, pToviding fpr two class-rooms. At its meeting tlie committee expressed its appreciation of the provision made^ which will benefit about S0 children. Testing Days for Drivers. The Main Highways Board traffie inspector, Mr. W. E. Yates, Dannevirke, in a letter to the Waipawa County Council, which was read at Monday *s meeting, intimated that the first and third Tuesdav of every montk would be' convenient for Mr. Semple to test applicants for driver's licenses, while lie (Mr. Yates) would be available on tlie second and'fourtk Monday of eaeh nlonth. Card Party at Onga. Another of a series of queen cariiival events was held at Ongaonga On Friday evening. This took the form of a most enjoyable "500" card part.y held at the residence of Mrs B. Diamon, sub-station. Despite the rough weather c'onditions, there was an excellont attendance of card eiithusiastfc Who enjoycd their games in a cosy sitting roora. The winners for th"e evening were: Ladies, Mrs G. Knight i, Miss D. Plummer 2. Gentlement, Mr (4. Sole 1, Mr J. Ivirk 2. A competition held during the evening was won by Mr Cameron. After the card games, ,tke ladies servtd a delicious supper, during which the opportunity was taken of thanking Air and Mrs B. Diamond f'or their hosP'.uibty.
