"THE MARUIWI MYTH"
Historieal Society Address The monthly meeting of tlie^ Hastings flistorieal Society is to he held in the Methodist Hall (opposite the Municipal Cheatre) nest Monday, at 8 p.m. The speakcr for this meeting will be tho Bishop of Waiapu, Dr. H. W. Wiffiams, who will deliver an address cntitled "The Maruiwd Myth." The subject is oue which is shrouded in mystery even at the present time. The Maruiwi are supposed to have been the people who inhabited New Zeahlnd before tho arrival of the Maoris. They were supposed to have arrived here some time between the' arrival of those carly Polynesiah discoverers, Kupe and Ngahue, and Toi and Whatonga, but from where, and hoW, are aspeets which are still unsolved. The Morioris of the Uhatham Islands, the last fuli-blooded member of whom died only four or five years ago, are supposed to be destmndanta of this mysterious raee. The whole question is really indefinite, and the inclusion of the word "myth" in the fcitle of the talk Is perhaps significant of the speaker's own attitude towards tho subject. The public is assured of an interesting address, as Dr. Williams himself is so intcrested in the subject that he has decided to jiresent an artielc for preservation in tho annals of the Polyuesian Society on the same subject and based on the talk that he will deliver on Monday night. The meeting is open to the general public.
