WAIPUKURAU BOXING

Our Own Correspondent.

SOME GOOD CONTESTS

From

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. The Municipal'Theatre, Waipukurau, was only moderately well-filled for the Waipukurau Boxing Club's tourney to-niglit. Soiuc good fights were staged, but there was not very niuch to be seen in the way of scientific boxing. The chief faults seemed to be failure to realise the value of straight punching and a tendency to overmucli clinching. However, there was pluck aplenty and every oontestant was a rfcttl trier. In the featured bout of the tourney, A. Kitt scored a convincing points win over J. Davis. The matching committee is to be congratulated on the fact that all the bouts were fairly evenly contested, two of the ten resultingi in draws. The judges were Drs. C; Raymond and f. Seton Norris, and Mr C. L. Crooks. Mr H. "M. Christie, M.P., was the refe'ree. GAYE ALL THEY HAD 'Two midgets F. Gibson (Waipukurau) 4st. 121b. and B. Sparling (Hastings), 5st. opened willingly and gave all they had right througih their three rounds. Sparling, using a solid right to advantage, scored a popular decisioa. HASTINGS AGAIN J. Bell (Waipukurau) 6st. 101b. met M. Sparling (Hastings), 6st. Ub. The Hastings boy took full advantage of his longer reach, but laid himself open to many heavy body blows, while the local lad bored in with head down and anns working like pistons. Sparling was rightly adjudged the better boxer. OHINESE HAS PLUCK

Lum Jack (Waipukurau), 5st. 91b. showed a, sound knowledge oi d,efence and footwork against S. Patere ^Hastings), 6st. 21b. The bout wai? a real fight. all the way and Peters carried olf the verdiot by virtua of cousistenc nse of a straight left. The Chmebo boy would maie a c.nssy boxor if he were taught to punch straight. The crowd applaudcd his plucky showing. PLAUDITS FROM THE OROWD Ihe match between C. Beale- (Has • tings;, 8st. 2lbs and D. H -'tohi ■.« (Hastings), 9st. 3lb. opened brightly, tb.o pair milling it freely ali over the ring to earn a round of appiause at ihe first gjong. At the end of the second there was nothing to choose between them, and it was only in the hard-fought final round of a strenuous bout, that Hutchins was able to establish a short lead. The pair were warmly applauded. A GOOD RIGHT FIST J. Davey (Waipukurau), 8st. 91b. produced the best right hand 60 far seen in the tourney, and poked it consistently in the ribs of T. Payne (Hastings), 9st. The visitor fouglit back with both fists, but was not able to comiect as cleanly as'his hard-hitting adversary. Towards the end of ytho thii'd session weight begon to tell, and Davey found himself on the delensive, Payne oatching up enough points in the final round to make it a draw. ANOTHER DRAWN MATCH. Both 9st. 61b. and well matched for height and' reach, J. Mclvor (Hastings) and H. Parsons (Palmerston N.) gave promdse of a good bout. And the "fans" were not disappointed. Both boys took plenty of punishment, standing toe to toe and exchanging blows regardless of cost. The judges gave the only possible verdict — a draw. GAVE AWAY A STONE— AND WON B. Nicol (Waipukurau), 6st. gave away a full stone to J. Collins (Palmerston North), 7st., and carried the fight to his opponent all thrpugh the first round. As the fight went on, weigFt began to tell and Nicol took a number of hard punches, but he kept on boring in and was still doing most of the leadiug at the final gong. The decision in his favour was euthusiastically received. OLINCHES AND WILD SWINGS. Ltox Daxis (Hastings) 8.4, rushed L. SlcLaLchlan (Palmerston North), 8sL 31b. to the ropes in his, own coi^uer and gpt in soveral short-ariu jabs as soon as the bout opened. A series oi' clinehes followed, and, but for oue or two iuberludes ivith a lofc of wild swinging by McLachlan, that was about all there was to it. Davis won an uninteresting bout by virtue of his aggressive tactics. A HARD illTTER I'lie l'onr-rounder between U. Mclvor (Hastings), 9st. 81b. ancl Joe Coliins (Palmerston North), 9st. (jlb, produced more open boxing, but with little willingness on either side 'to mix it in the early stages. In the iast two rounds the boys got down to serious business and Mclvor was momentarilv ilooied in the third when be walkecl into a savage right. Collins maintaincd the lead in a willing fourth to win on accouut of his hard hittins.

THE STAIt BOUT A solid rally in the first miuute of the star bout ol; the evening saw ,1 Davis (Hastings), lOst. -81b. forced throusrb tbe ropes before the whirlwind onslaught of A. Kitt, alRo pf Hastings, and registering) the same weight. Davis was back in a flash. and the first two rounds produced some solid fighting. with Kitt doing most oi the leadiug.. In the third round Davis took some liard blows l'roiu a ( punishing light and finished slower.

However, be rallied in the fourth, and had a shade the better of the fifth, but Kitt made no mistake about tbe last uiinutes of the final session and I won a well-deservcd deoiaion. . '• ®
