Theft of State Advances Moneys

PALMERSTON N., Last Night. "You can put down the leniency oi the Court to the fact that you are a woman and have a large family," stated Mr Justice Ostler in the £upreme Court when admitting Alice Hughes to probation. His Honour pointed out to the prisoner, who was found guilty of the theft of moneys belonging to the State Advances Corporation, that she was already on probation for obtaiuing credit by fraud, and it was not usual to grant probation a second time. A third offence would meau gaol. Hughes was ordered to repay £20 at the rate of £1 a week. The circumstances of the case were that 'Hughes received a voucher intended for another Alice Hughes. eud although warned by two separate [■«!•• ties that she could not cash it, she .did ao and spent ihe monej.
